Dear Rotarians, As I am sure you are all aware, I am currently taking a Leave of Absence from Rotary. There are three reasons for this. This first is that over the past 18 months I have given so much time and energy to Rotary that my health (both mental and physical) has suffered, the second is that due to this time and energy commitment, my own business, friendships, and personal interests have been neglected. There is a clear cause and effect between these two outcomes! The third reason for which I do not want to attend Rotary meetings is the unpleasant undercurrent in our Club where our elected board members are actively trying to make positive changes to our meetings and are being constantly undermined by members who seems to want to stagnate in a Rotary scenario from the 1970s. This was made abundantly obvious to me yesterday when I received a call (during my work hours when guess what, folks, I was actually trying to work) to discuss the National Anthem. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!! Is this really something to which time-poor Rotarians need to devote energy??? For the record, I don't care whether we sing the anthem or not but I do wholeheartedly support my President and would NEVER have the discourtesy to undermine one of his decisions in such a way! Out of interest, I looked up what Australians of my generation and younger think are the BIG issues in the world today and here are the results: How interesting that whether or not we count and report attendance at meetings or how many pages the bulletin uses if you have to print it didn't make it on this list! Unbelieveably, 18-35 year olds don't seem to care whether we do or don't have a sargent session or a head table. Now wait for the really huge bombshell... this data would seem to indicate that we are not facing armageddon if we don't sing the National Anthem! ASTOUNDING! Who would ever have believed it! I would like to suggest that perhaps it is time that we Rotarians started to use our time and energy on things that actually matter. I know that the vast majority of our club already knows this and do this but for the tiny percentage who seem to have forgotten what Rotary is really about, don't you think it's time to move on? Sincerely Morwenna |
