NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT.

G’day Everyone,

A big thank you goes to Jim Barnes for organizing and running the Ageing Well session on Friday, August 27. It was very informative. Thank you to his partner Catherine and Kev Armstrong (Men’s Shed) for helping out as well.

Next week, 30 August – 3 September, the Club is on Meals on Wheels delivery for the week. Please let Julie Beddow know what day suits you to help out on: 0428 178 618.

We are all off to the Ballandean Hall on Thursday, September 9 to present a Paul Harris Fellow to one of the locals. More details will be sent soon. (I think fish and chips are on the menu!)

On Sunday, September 12, the Rotary Club are catering with a BBQ lunch for the open day at Foxbar Falls. This is a fund raiser for Karma, our Apple and Grape Ambassador. She has sent out an email to everyone outlining the events her committee and herself have organized. Please support her fundraising as much as you can.  Attached is a roster for the BBQ lunch at Foxbar Falls. Please return it to me with the time that you are able to help out.
Have a good week and remember the Rotary theme for this year:
Cheers,
Jim

Trauma Kits for local Police Officers

When Rotary Satellite members heard that Stanthorpe Police were purchasing their own trauma kits, they actioned sponsorship of the purchase of a personal Tachmed Trauma Kit for each Stanthorpe Police Officer.

Blood loss is quick and is one of the main causes of pre-hospital fatalities. Without proper action, someone can die within minutes. Motor vehicle crashes, industrial, farming and sporting incidents can result in major haemorrhage. Our local Stanthorpe police, in trauma situations, are usually the first responders. Sometimes, scene safety prevents ambulance crews reaching potential casualties until the police have secured the scene. Yet the police lack the lifesaving equipment necessary to act as first responders.

With the Tachmed Kits attached to their personal equipment vest, the Stanthorpe Police Officers can now reduce waiting time for the injured and action lifesaving first aid. Rotary Satellite Club of Stanthorpe thanks local Paramedic Andrew Bell for drawing this issue to their attention and local Member James Lister MP for sponsoring, on behalf of the local community, the purchase of the personal trauma kits.

Spooky Walk

Spooky Walk will be on Saturday 30th (day before Halloween) at the Show grounds.
Hi everyone,

Thanks for a great meeting last night. As I mentioned in the Spooky walk update we would really love any additional support in either encouraging/recommending a local business or group to be involved in arranging to host an activity site, or yourselves getting a few friends or family together to run one.

The more options we have the better the event will be for all involved and I'm sure you'll have a great time in the process. It is a general halloween theme so there is a broad scope to be creative as long as it is appropriate, fun, spooky and safe.

If wondering what to do or is something holding you back from getting involved, then we have plenty of options and ideas and are happy to share them with those interested.

Please reach out to either me, Nicole or Paola if interested in running a site or know of a business or other community group that would be up for it. There will obviously be other volunteer support options you can assist with in the lead up, on the day and post event as well so again please let us know your availability and interest.

Many thanks in advance,

Nathan 0423 781 631, Nicole 0448 730 191, Paola 0468 785 613

Apple & Grape Ambassador - Foxbar Falls Day

Hi Everyone!

As of yesterday I have fully confirmed all our street stalls for the rest of the year.
Our first one will be held on the 25th of September, in front of the Country Club, from 9am-1pm. The rest of the street stalls will all be at the same times and place on the 23rd of October and the 27th of November. There are dates that are currently being organised within Satellite Club for baking and packing sessions, and I will have locations and dates for those confirmed shortly.

I have also organised a BBQ breakfast on the 31st of October in the Piazza. I understand that this is the morning after spooky walk, but due to the long weekend and limited places to get breakfast on a Sunday morning, we have decided that this would be worthwhile. A few early-risers would be appreciated to help run this BBQ. 7am-10am.

Coming up, we also have the Foxbar Falls open day with the Grower's Ambassador. Our main job at this event will be the BBQ lunch. The event starts at 10am and goes until 4pm. A group of people running and setting up the BBQ will be needed, and I am happy to organise a roster for 1-2 hour shifts per person. There are a few other jobs available, such as monitoring fire pits, people to sit on the gate, people to help direct parking and raffles/lucky door prizes to be organised and sold. Please let me know for availability and interest in this event and what job you feel you would be most suited to. I have a willing committee to fill extra jobs, so filling the BBQ with Rotarians is my first priority.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend, and I look forward to hearing back from you.
Your Young Ambassador,
Karma O'Reilly

OUR IMPACT ON EDUCATION

The Rotary Foundation supports education through scholarships, donations, and service projects around the world.

  • 500adults raised their reading levels by three grades in Detroit
  • $100 mil in grants to get clean water in Lebanese schools

Rotary members make amazing things happen, like:

Opening schools: In Afghanistan, Rotary members opened a girls’ school to break the cycle of poverty and social imbalance.

Teaching adults to read: Rotary members in the United States partnered with ProLiteracy Detroit to recruit and train tutors after a study showed that more than half of the local adult population was functionally illiterate.

New teaching methods: The SOUNS program in South Africa, Puerto Rico and the United States teaches educators how to improve literacy by teaching children to recognize letters by sounds instead of names.

Making schools healthy: Rotarians are providing clean, fresh water to every public school in Lebanon so students can be healthier and get a better education.

Enhancing educational systems: In Kenya, Rotary clubs are working with the Global Partnership for Education and local and national governments to advance life-long learning opportunities for poor and marginalized children. Learn more.

"When you teach somebody how to read, they have that for a lifetime. It ripples through the community, one by one."
